California and New York City
This painting was made in California. I was painting in a studio, old army barracks, out on a point, into the Pacific. It was surrounded by cliffs, the pelicans drifted, magueys had a sharp spikey shape, and barking seals all made a primitive atmosphere.
I blew up the gesture I was using, larger, more bold, and one painting was called Nuclear Whale.
I had grown up near Three Mile Island and would never get over the human possibility of destroying the environment. The Whale was a symbol for the ultimate figure, could we contaminate even it?
I evolved through these characters to more abstract surface related figures, somewhat through figure drawings I still was making.
Everything had a severity of black and white and the elemental influence of the Iliad .
