1984 Achilles/ Tent
I was out in California painting for my first show at The Anne Plumb Gallery on Greene St in SoHo, NYC, and was trying to distill everything in my work up to this point.
I could draw and it seemed I had to use it. The more abstract forms drifted away and became stripes. Most paintings were begun on this symbolic ground of landscape. I was going to re imbue the flatter space with my intrusion of landscape space.
There are so many things envolved , like I said everything from up to this time played some part.
We didn't say it then but recently I realized I was trying to return an image to Abstract Expressionism.
Anselm Kiefer and Julian Schnabel were the artists with the most presence of the time. There was alot of Black and White paint. I saw recently a small David Reed painting of the time black and white landscape like with a geometry of some sort.
The paintings had long titles from books like the Iliad, Poetics of Space, Neitzche, and Melville.
As a vote from the artists, Ross Bleckner and Lucio Pozzi bought the first paintings I sold.
